Ohm mudra, also called deity gesture, is a mudra in hatha yoga. A mudra (Sanskrit for seal or gesture) is a term that goes back to the classical texts of the Vedas and in this case means that the hand is held in a certain position through which prana is guided in a certain way. Mudras are mainly practiced while meditating. In the ohm mudra, the tips of the thumb and index finger touch each other and together they make an "o". A different meaning is attributed to the fingers. The thumb represents the divine energy. It is the symbol of willpower that is not conditioned by karma. The index finger is associated with Jupiter and symbolizes ego and expansion. The energies would be controlled by unconscious patterns. The "o" symbolizes the balance between the karma of god and the person concerned. The jnana mudra (wisdom mudra) is said to reveal the deity and the ahamkara mudra (the ego-transcending gesture) individuality, as they come together in this mudra and only life manifests. Continuing to make the ohm mudra would make one more peaceful, less aggressive, and more in solidarity with oneself.
