Larimar is a mineral, a rare variety of pectolite found only in the Dominican Republic, in the Los Chupaderos site in the Sierra de Baoruco mountain range. Larimar can be found in the colors white, light blue, green-blue and dark blue. Pectolite is always white, except in its variation Larimar. In Larimar, the calcium has been replaced by cobalt, hence the blue color, which is also called volcanic blue. Although pectolite can be found in several places on Earth, Larimar is only found in the Dominican Republic. Partly for this reason, it is also popularly called Atlantis stone (it is said that the Dominican republic was part of Atlantis). Larimar is named after the daughter of the discoverer of the stone, Miguel Méndez, Larissa and the Spanish word mar = sea.
