Heliotrope is a mineral and a variety of quartz, more specifically a variety of chalcedony. Heliotrope is a bicolor nesosilicate. The basic color is dark green, with red points on top. The name heliotrope is derived from the Greek helios, meaning sun, and trepein, "to turn". The classical source of heliotrope is the Kathiawar Peninsula in northwestern India. Nowadays it is also mined in Brazil and Australia.
