Heliotrope is a mineral and a variety of quartz, more specifically a variety of chalcedony. Heliotrope is a two-tone nesosilicate. The basic color is dark green, with red tips on it. The name heliotrope is derived from the Greek helios, meaning sun, and trepein, meaning "to turn". The classical source of heliotrope is the Kathiawar Peninsula in northwestern India. Today it is also mined in Brazil and Australia.
