Tiger's eye is a variety of quartz. The color of the stone is yellow-brown to brown, streaked, and opaque. Deposits are found in Africa, India, Mexico, California, and Australia, among others. Tiger's eye is formed by the selection of black-blue asbestos fibers called crocidolite. This results in solid inclusions of hair-like crystals in the quartz. Due to the oxidation of the original crocidolite fibers, the stone's golden-glossy limonite fibers are formed. Tiger's eye is named so because the stone has a light reflection that resembles a tiger's eye. This slit-like light effect is called chatoyering or the 'cat's eye effect'. When the stone is cut cabochon (rounded), the beautiful cat's-eye effect is best visible. The color of the stone gives it its name: the red variety is called Cat's Eye, the blue one is called Hawk's Eye, and the yellow one is called Tiger's Eye (golden yellow, golden brown).
