The Rider-Waite Tarot, published in December 1909, is one of the most popular esoteric card decks in the world. Over the years, this version of the tarot has been known by various names: Rider-Waite-Smith, Waite-Smith, Waite-Colamn Smith or simply the Rider Tarot. Artist Pamela Colman Smith designed the images according to the instructions of Arthur Rider Waite. The symbolism present in the cards was derived from the work of the 19th century occultist Eliphas Levi. The images are deceptively simple and almost childlike, but are full of symbolism.
