The pentagram is a five-pointed star and one of the oldest symbols in the world: it was used more than 4000 years before Christ. The word comes from the Greek πεντάγραμμον (pentagrammon), which means five lines. In Greece, the pentagram is also called pentalfa (= five alphas), because five A's can be recognized in it. Today the pentagram is mainly used as a symbol in esotericism and occultism. In modern Satanism, an inverted version of the pentagram is used. The pentagram is originally a pre-Christian symbol. This sign is therefore also seen by some people as the sign of Satan (the devil) and it is also common in Wicca circles. The pentagram is said to have been rejected as a devil symbol by Constantine the Great to convert "pagans" to Christianity.
